Daniel Wu Criticizes the Korean Flower Boy Look: “It Affects Your Acting”

Chinese-American actor Daniel Wu hit the Korean “flower boy” image, saying it doesn’t do any justice to one’s acting.

“A lot of people like to make themselves look like Korean celebrities nowadays,” he said. Actors style their hair in “strange ways” and wear lot of make up, to the point that “men don’t look like men anymore,” he observed.

But Wu justified that these “Korean celebrities look the way they do because they are singers, not actors.” However, if actors try to look like these singers and dancers, the kind of acting a performer delivers becomes really different.

“If you dress up strangely every day, how would you be convincing in a role where you’re supposed to look plain?” he asked. This, according to him, would leave a rather stark impression on the audience, which could damage, instead of promote, the actor’s image.

The 41-year-old Wu has gone a long way. More than his good looks and personality, the Hong Kong-based star, who debuted as an actor in the 1998 romantic drama film Bishonen (Beautiful Boys), would still prefer to deliver a stirring performance rather than stay good looking on screen all the time.

Wu revealed that his love for acting was the main reason he joined show business.

“It’s not because I want to be a celebrity,” he said. In fact, he still prefers to be known as a “traditional actor.”

Wu’s latest project, the Hollywood film Warcraft: The Beginning, is a huge hit in China, despite its lukewarm reception in the American market. In the movie, based on the famous video game, Wu is seen portraying Gul’dan, the wicked orc wizard, who has a personality totally different from Daniel’s own image.

  • @suiko_no_shin & @secondstrike Ah, the justin bieber/bowl cut–I see what you mean now. I think if you watch the older Korean movies, you won’t see much of that haircut. It’s a shame that so many Korean stars have that hairstyle now…Korean guys naturally have attractive facial features and it looks like they ruin it with the justin biebs style. What a waste of a nice face :(

@suiko_no_shin I hope China helps the rest of Asia kick this habit. I’m honestly fearful, they’ll copy it instead.

@natalie_ng The guy looks fine. He would fit on the set of Young and Dangerous. It’s the bowl cuts, justin bieber cuts, etc that I can’t stand. Lots of the cuts I see even when they try look like they’re copying something out of an anime or a celebrity but they don’t have the aesthetics to pull it off.

I have trouble finding a Korean drama to watch (still haven’t watched any) because of the way the guys look. I just can’t take it seriously.

I watch 100% Chinese dramas (tbf I’ve only seen two complete series, The Empress of China and Ode to Joy, currently watching Nirvana in Fire). Switch the country to China and watch as that style plummets lol!

  • I used to date a guy from Hong Kong who styled his hair like this:

I actually really liked his hairstyle. I thought it looked great on him. But then again, I guess it depends on who you’re trying to attract. I’m not too sure if non-Asian girls are keen on dating guys that look like that. But Asian girls who are big into Asian media and fangirl over Asian male idols probably wouldn’t mind (or even prefer it).

@neonfuzion Yeah, BTS’s style is definitely more typical of the flower boy look. Bigbang is a little more masculine, but then again, I think that’s because they’ve been around longer, before the flower boy look became popular. Although, recently, Bigbang is slowly changing over to more flower-boyish :(

This shit is not manly. Its gay. AM who style their hair like this have no one to blame if they dont get dates.

    Saving this for my db.

  • Huh. But most Asian male actors don’t look like k-pop stars. Most Asian male actors, at least the ones I know of, usually don’t have any (or very minimal) make-up on in their movies and don’t style their hair the way kpop stars do. Unless Wu is referring to specific actors that I don’t know about, but the vast majority of Korean/Japanese/Hong Kong movie stars don’t opt for the kpop look.
