Whites stereotyping of Chinese immigrants/students studying abroad

  • I’ve been meaning to ask about this since someone brought this up several days ago here but supposedly there have been several comments (made by whites, I assume) on a sub on Chinese immigrants/students’ behavior towards them. You can read about it here: http://imgur.com/a/hZVPr

To me, it seems like the whites making those comments are simply butthurt that the Chinese they came across don’t want anything to do with them. It’s interesting though because they seem to be under the impression that the Chinese they met don’t want anything to do with non-Chinese people at all. However, since many of them used Chinese foreign exchange students/students who are studying abroad, a group of people I have numerous encounters with having gone to college in California, I really can’t relate to much of what they’re saying.

I have gotten to know, befriended, and even dated several Chinese students from China while I was in college, despite being Asian-American and not knowing much Chinese. Sure, they were all guys, but I was also studying a field that was mostly male-dominated, so I came across a lot of Asian guys from Asia in my classes. For the most part, I thought they were very friendly, polite and fun to talk to.

From my perspective, it seems like those who made those comments on that sub are simply trying to make the Chinese look bad out of severe butthurt that one Chinese person would rather not talk to them. I’m not entirely sure though since I’ve mostly had experiences with the guys (none of the girls). Have any of you guys had many encounters with Chinese immigrants/students?

  • @neonfuzion That doesn’t sound fun at all. Yeah, I do think having all Asian friends earlier in life is better. If you ever have kids, move to California or Hawaii. They will thank you!

I’ve never been the token Asian before since I never hung out in an all-white group, but I would imagine it to be very awkward and uncomfortable. Sorry to hear you had to grow up with mostly whites though!!! But at least your college experiences seemed much better.

Yeah , it really sucks. Hanging out with them , you always second think everything about if your too asian or something. I wished I had all asian friends earlier in my life. Your very lucky you had asian social groups for everything ! :)

@secondstrike That’s interesting, though not surprising. Many whites in America would rather move to hillbilly hicksville in the middle of Idaho where dental care doesn’t exist if they see too many minorities moving into their neighborhoods. But yes, the irony in them complaining about us not wanting anything to do with them is pretty strong.

@bugoutfever Oh okay, so you had similar experiences with me, except yours was with the girls. That would prove the point then that these whites are exaggerating or straight up lying when they claimed that the Chinese students only hung out with other Chinese students, probably in an attempt to make the students look anti-social or arrogant.

In my uni experience, I hung out with a lot of international students who were girls, dated some too. I’m not sure what to say about the situation besides that it mirrors much of what is said. Surprisingly there is some consistency. The comments in the picture complaining, if they are white not Asian, confirmed. The comments here about hanging with other overseas Asians besides just Chinese, also confirmed, maybe to a lesser extent depending on their comfort with English. I find most of this is correct and I don’t have a problem with it. In fact I prefer it. Not sure what else to say really.

Found this funny study that once again proves what hypocrites these people are.

    IcbiFON.jpg

White Americans are far less likely to have friends of another race than non-white Americans, according to a new poll from Reuters/Ipsos. About 40 percent of white Americans have only white friends, while about 25 percent of non-white Americans are surrounded only by people of their own race.

    further down

And America is not alone. Back in 2004, Britain’s Commission for Racial Equality found that more than 9 out of 10 white Britons had no or very few ethnic minority friends. At the time, the commission’s chair Trevor Phillips told the Guardian that the study revealed why “for no apparent reason [white Britons] can become hostile and racist” toward minorities. The survey also found that, as in America, younger white Britons had more friends of another race than those of older generations.

Now, I haven’t gone through the report so there could be caveats with the methodology such as there being much more white people than non-whites. However, on the surface, it sounds very plausible.

That’s true that most white kids are also cliquey, despite their accusations of us being cliquey. I suppose it’s also down to the differences in lifestyles (getting drunk and passing out every weekend night might not be the Chinese students’ sort of thing).

But also , who wants to be the lone asian person in a group of white people. I dont know about anyone else , but I really hate being token asian. Being the token asian somehow makes racist jokes okay (to them) when your out with a group of white friends , but you start to double think everything in terms of "Am I being too asian!!!". In my experience , because I grew up largely with lots of white people - when I was young thoughts like this would always pop up. It wasn’t until I reached college , had an all asian group of friends for the first time , that I realized when you have all asian friends ; its like serene peace, you don’t ever have to think of your identity ; your are just accepted.

And some comments about why chinese students dont intermingle with other students and re insular. If I was them , I wouldnt want to intermingle with whites either. And I mean , white kids hang out in their own insular groups all the fucking time. They dont make ANY effort to hang out with minorities either.

Lol, my friends and I are Asian-American, born and raised in the U.S., and we STILL don’t want to intermingle with whites much, so I suppose we can’t blame them.

I do think the Chinese students are open to engaging with other Asians and even Asian-Americans/Asian-Canadians and that it’s mainly just whites they may feel uncomfortable with (due to what you said; white racism/microaggressions).

From my experience , this is very true.

Just read the analysis. That was actually a pretty good read. I found this part to be intriguing:

“If I feel like it’s going to be an event where it’s all white people, I probably wouldn’t want to go,” she says. “There’s a lot of just drinking. It’s not that I don’t like white people. But you tend to hang out with people of the same race.”

I find that somewhat overlaps with the other topic on the AI sub about how most normal Asian girls tend to stick to their own race (while the Anna Lus enjoy, or even prefer, white company), but anyways, that’s sort of off topic.

I believe you made a good point about the microaggressions they face in everyday white society, which would of course deter them from wanting to interact with whites. I have a suspicion that while whites may see the Chinese students as avoiding everyone non-Chinese, I don’t believe the Chinese students actually do stick with only other Chinese. I do think the Chinese students are open to engaging with other Asians and even Asian-Americans/Asian-Canadians and that it’s mainly just whites they may feel uncomfortable with (due to what you said; white racism/microaggressions).

On the soft genocide; I’ve heard of that. That’s ridiculously cruel. So they didn’t allow Asian women in but didn’t let Asian men get with other women either. And here they are, saying, “Woe is me! Why don’t Asians like me?!?!”
